NX does not just compress graphics. NX uses the encryption of SSH.

tried NX server with Knoppix at one location and the client at a
friends house. With 1.5Mbs ADSL it was *MUCH* better than VNC. I even
could play Kasteroids as if it was local. This is fantastic
technology. It works by compressing the X protocol and using SSH to
deliver it. So it's compressed and encrypted by SSH. I'm pretty sure
VNC is only secure for the password after that nothing is encrypted
(or compressed). The advantage of VNC is that it requires almost no
cpu strength. Whereas NX requires both server AND client to
compress/decompress. So the client needs some cpu/memory muscle. In
terms of LTSP the client would need to run the NX client app locally.
I have noticed a startup company that has just started to advertise on
osnews and distrowatch that sells this setup.

Using freeNX with LTSP has been discussed on the k12lstp list and the
upshot is that it's not worth it for a 100Mbs LAN (especially switches
with Gig-E uplinks) because there is a local app problem plus the
clients need to be fatter. But I think it's great for low
bandwidth/fat client situations.
