Mahesh, which display manager are you using? There are three that are widely used: XDM, KDM, and GDM. Each has a way to correct this problem, but the solution is different depending on which display manager you use. The "who", "w", and "users" commands all use the same database to track who is signed in, and who is not. The database is stored in utmp and wtmp. Regardless of which DM you use, the DM needs to be configured to call "sessreg" at sign-in to add an entry, and to call it again at sign-out to removed the entry. GDM runs /etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default at sign-in and /etc/X11/gdm/PostSession/Default at sign-out. XDM runs /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole and /etc/X11/xdm/TakeConsole. I'm not sure about KDM, I've never used it.
