Hi Rolf,

indeed yes. I've used vmware a lot for testing LTSP setups. As far as I know, 
vmware doesn't change your kernel (!), but it needs dev packages to install 
(using vmware-config.pl) correctly.

My advice, get vmware to work first on some hardware using S9.1, then move it 
to your LTSP server. 

In fact, using the latest vmware one may set up a bunch of vmware machines on 
one machine (the physical one) and let one of the virtuals be the LTSP server 
and the others be clients. I think they call it "teams".
