I've got one set up and currently have only 3 users on it, myself
included, so I can't tell you anything about it's scalability. 

Set up is straightforward though. Any issues you might encounter are the
same ones as those for a normal debian install. Make sure
your /etc/hosts.allow is set up properly since many of debian's daemons
(in.tftpd, mountd, gdm, portmap, etc) are compiled with tcpwrappers.

I've also got freenx installed so my colleagues using windows can easily
run nx sessions. Save a lot of trouble trying to find and install
x-servers on windows. Works well even over a vpn connection back to
office.

The gnome environment in ubuntu is very nicely done. Best linux desktop
experience I ever have.
