I have been experimenting with using Knoppix. It won't be a thin client
since the kernel and other stuff actually boots from Knoppix locally. But
if it sees the wireless cards that's all I care about for now. Although
after connecting to the LTSP server it will be running all the apps on that
server.
One of the keys to LTSP is that you connect to a different X server to get
your screen. (Of course LTSP does more than that.)
So if we can get Knoppix to connect to the X server used by the LTSP
server, we should be able to login and see the desktop.
First we have to boot Knoppix into a non-GUI mode. At Knoppix boot,
enter "knoppix 3" so it will boot to runlevel 3 without a GUI.
Next we need to connect to the X server used by the LTSP server. In my
case this is 192.168.4.2. At the command prompt,
machine# X -query 192.168.4.2 :1
Note: there is a space between X and -query and before the :1
Note: you can use the hostname in place of the IP if you have name
resolution working.
Note: be sure you have already modified xdmcp to allow remote connections
or you will have problems. You need to this to get LTSP working so it
should already be done.
After a short delay you should get the login screen.
I use Gentoo Linux as my LTSP server so I followed parts of this, but I
don't think its really Gentoo specific.

I still have to see about modifying Knoppix to have this launch
automatically at boot. I am sure its asking too much of people to have
them start Knoppix with "knoppix 3" and then use then use "X -query"
Hopefully this will help someone with wireless. And thanks to the LTSP
team who give me this idea at LinuxWorld in Boston.
