I found this setup a little while back and tried it, it's not as robust as one would like but it does work for the most part. This might be something to try out anyhow and possibly get some ideas from. It's also GNU/GPL so it could make for a simpler start. Also i don't think there is a link to this from the motion site so I'm not sure if the developers even know it exists.
