I tried 'X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL = Auto' but nothing changes
The mouse is always too fast, in Gnome and in GDM login screen.
In the Gnome mouse preference, I have to put it to zero to have a good
speed.

Also, is the mouse always too fast? Even before you login ?
Once logged in, maybe you could try using the mouse applet in Gnome or
KDE to adjust the mouse acceleration.
