Hi, I have been wanting to experiment with running the window manager locally.
About 8 years ago, when we re-used netware diskless clients, I was surprised by the number of workstations we could run off a P3 by shifting the window manager and the screensaver to the local machine. I finally, managed to spend time on this activity get some of these working in the LTSP environment. I have used TinyLogin and Matchbox because icewm was giving some problems. (It would not surprise me if the new youngsters may find Matchbox window manager more intuitive as they are growing up on Nokia.) Subsequently, I could use the source of icewm from the ThinStation project, which builds and works on the LTSP environment as well. In case anyone is interested, I can send the package def files for building these packages. Incidentally, the local window managers work with 2,4 kernel. I am not sure about why they are not working with 2.6 as yet. The key issue remaining is a convenient way to start remote applications from the local window manager, preferably by using the menus on the server. regards Anil ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the 'Do More With Dual!' webinar happening July 14 at 8am PDT/11am EDT.
