Hi gang,
I'm working on setting up my third ltsp server in 5 years. I'm
bewildered by something, though. On my previous servers, I always used
a script that invoked 'slay' to kill off all the processes running by a
user. The script was executed by icewm when the user was logging out.
On my new server, not all the processes are killed. I have two types of
accounts--both use icewm; one is just for internet browsing, with
desktop icons (provided by idesk) to firefox, mozilla, opera, and the
gnome print manager. The other has a script that is run on startup that
opens firefox and re-opens it if it's closed.
On the first type of account, after logging out gconfd-2 is usually left
running. Sometimes ssh-agent is there too. On the second type of
account, the script that restarts firefox is still running, and firefox
itself is still running. I've tried altering my logout script by using
killall to shut down the problem processes before using slay, by
switching to pkill or plain old kill, but those processes are still left
running. However, if you log into a shell as the same user that has
those running processes, and run the logout script, all the processes
are killed off as they should be. I am utterly stumped. Has anyone
else run into this? Could it be the login manager I'm using (gdm), or
something to do with pam? I have no idea what else to try at this
point. I used to use xdm--should I switch back to that? I also tried
slaying all the processes in gdm's postsession script, as someone else
in the archives said they had success with, but that hasn't worked either.
BTW, this is on a Libranet 3.0 server that's been upgraded to Debian
Stable (Sarge). I've also tried several different versions of slay,
from oldstable to unstable, as well as the original version available on
sourceforge.
I'd be grateful if anyone can give me some advice on this. If not,
thanks at least for letting me vent!
