Technically it may not be the window manager but rather some other part of the "desktop environment" that gets cranky. In particular GNOME's Nautilus doesn't seem to like multiple logins and its icons for files all change to a generic document icon. Other GNOME things like 'gconfd' and Bonobo stuff also seems to spaz out with multiple logins.
