Hmm... depending on your model, you could consider installing a Linux
firmware on it. Yes, Linux! Then, you can have everything you need on
the AP, forwarding NFS X and things alike to the ethernet server.

One detail regarding wireless devices is that I don't know, until now,
any device with PXE or etherboot enabled. So, you would have to build
an initrd of your own, loading the driver and then asking an IP in
this interface and doing all the stuff.

I have a copy of slax which I have heavily modified. In it you select a paramenter ltsp=ip or hostname of ltsp server.

It will boot, load atheros ndiswrapper drivers, which gives it a connection speed of 108mb/s (yeah right! - but faster than the madwifi drivers), it auto guesses most configuration settings, has the wep key on the isolinux.cfg filename and gives me a gdm login off my ltsp server over wireless with a dlink 802.11g card (netgear works too) on a 233mhz ageing laptop.

Oh, it has esd sound support too. :-)

No need for complicated dhcp support, but a bit more work per pc and a cd-rom drive.

Anyone interested, where should I upload the iso?

(The windows drivers go on the cd and it will try then automagically on bootup. It works with atheros and a usb2 zonet card on the laptop - but hangs on a mini itx system.)

I'd definitely be interested in giving this a try. I would certainly appreciate it if you
uploaded it somewhere. How big is the iso?

119mb.. Has X and X fonts embedded.. Have repackaged it up, but you will
need to unpack it and edit isolinux.cfg before you start. There is a
make_iso.sh command embedded for both linux and windows.
