Sorry if this doesn't get threaded correctly, I just joined the list and had
to copy-paste the subject to reply.
I'd like to add that its possible to use boot disks or CD-ROM's that are
configured with support for the particular wireless card in a laptop in order
to boot to an LTSP server. This avoids the costs of bridge hardware and if
cheap CD-R's are used, makes it relatively painless to replace any broken
media. However, the IP of the LTSP server is hard-coded on the image.
I have experience building these images and I've tested it in a 30 client
classroom using 3 parallel Orinoco 802.11g WAP's on channels 1, 6 and 11 (to
avoid crosstalk and so that the wireless cards choose then least congested
WAP). Contact me off-list if you're interested in some consulting.
I tried setting up a wireless LTSP client about a year ago, but having
poked around
the various thin-client distros I found most of them required too much
work to make
this an attractive option (I'm too lazy), but I'm sure that once you
have it working it
can be a good solution. The main problem I had at the time was support
for PCMCIA
network cards. AFAIK, support for 802.11g cards is still patchy (I had
to use the
ndiswrapper with XP drivers) on Linux.
However, just as James wrote somewhere on this site, the first time I
saw a laptop
with XP installed boot Linux over the network I thought "how cool is
that!" and
the elegance of the network booting approach appeals to me which is why
I had
another go.
I happened to have quite a bit of wireless hardware to play with and one
of the
laptops I wanted to use didn't have a working CD drive, but I am sure
that the CD
booting approach is a very viable option for most people.
