I bought a refurbished Intuos3 USB 4x5 directly from Wacom, $180:

Humm--a $3,000 monitor on a thin client?

I would suggest a USB 4x5 Graphire4 if you just want to play around. $99
list price, $75 or less if you shop around.

The Graphire doesn't have as much pressure sensitivity resolution and
lacks some of the more advanced features of the Intuos, but it should
suffice for a mouse replacement/digital sketch pad on a diskless client.
My Wacom tablet has been working out great on the diskless workstation.
