Fortunately looking in ltsp-src, the samba package has some debian
patches - smbmount-nomtab.patch and smbmount-mtab-flags.patch :-)

I rebuilt samba, using lbe, and included these patches into the
package.def file. It now works fine using 'smbmount -n' - no mtab
problem anymore.
