Hello,
I have used and setup LTSP in several locations over the past few years.
And am convinced that this is a very good option for organizations (a
community of not-for-profit organizations I engage with) that are low on
resources and slim in the ICT department (typically can afford one
"experienced/semi-expeienced computer user" and nothing more).. I think
LTSP is a good option for us. And my experience has proven me right
these last few years...
However, every installation and upgrade has always been a challenge that
I have willingly accepted. The latest problem I have faced comes up in
the following message I get when trying a test-installation of LTSP (in
FC4 as well as Ubuntu Breezy):
--- quote error message -----
NET4: Linux TCP/IP 1.0 for NET4.0
IP Protocols: ICMP, UDP, TCP
IP: routing cache hash table of 2048 buckets, 16Kbytes
TCP: Hash tables configured (established 16384 bind 32768)
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.0
VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 08:02
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02
-- end quote ---------
And the system hangs here........
The configuration:
Server:
Ubuntu Breezy on an AMD64 K8N Neo4
or FC4 X84_64 on a dual processor Xeon
LTSP: 4.1
Test Clients: IBM Thinkpad R51 with 256Mb RAM with an Intel 82541GI
Gigabit Ethernet controller.
The same message whe I've tried to ltsp-boot the AMD64 K8N with the Xeon
X86_64 as the server...
My default pxelinux.cfg/default file has:
-----------
prompt 0
label linux
kernel bzImage-2.4.26-ltsp-2 init=/linuxrc rw root=/dev/ram0
initrd=initrd-2.4.26-ltsp-2.gz
append NIC=forcedeth
-----------
**I have tried with other Kernel and Initrd versions... and am stumped!**
** hosts and dhcpd.conf files are in order*
And having read various docs and googled for any of the following:
VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 08:02
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02
I am still at a loss. I conclude that am missing a small detail
somewhere.....What is it... ?
Any enlightenment here...?
Thanks,
leo
