So what happens? do the terminals do anything? I had a problem here where the 
terminals could not be logged into  - the login window would just die and 
come back. Logged in terminals would stop responding. I found the /tmp 
directory was getting enormous and used up all the space on the partion. 
My /tmp is a separate partition. 

Rebooting would fix the problem but rm /tmp * -Rf was quicker :-)
