Jim,
thanks a lot for all this, now it works.

Rolf,
Ok, it looks like it is running, so it should allow connections on
port 9200.
Try telnetting into it and see if it accepts the connection:
telnet ws001 9200
Yes, did work
Of course, substitute the correct name in place of "ws001".
And this was it! I remembered I had some misplaced entries to /etc/hosts
when I tried first, so that will have been the reason for the first
failing. Arrrgh - banging my head on the table... :-)
Now:
Then, assuming that works, you could try:
ltspinfo -h ws001 -s
But this is strange: All 22 clients in that room react and power down
immediately, but one of them only reacts when in shell, not when in xdm,
and even when in shell it will just run to the point when it says "power
down", but it stays there. When in Xdm, nothing happens at all, and no
error message. It just ignores the command. (Unfortunately, I tried with
this very client before writing my first mail :-) )
Do you have any idea what THAT could be???
I've cross-checked BIOS settings with the other clients, but everything
is the same.
Well, after a while I found that using the 2.6.9 kernel for this client
will work here (I used a 2.4 kernel for the others).
Anyway, thanks for your time.
Rolf
