Thanks, everyone, for the ideas. It turned out that the clients I am
trying to monitor were, in fact, turned off when I tried the ping. When
they are on, ping works just fine. Since both the server and clients are
remote from me, I mistakenly thought they were on but was wrong. Still,
I like many of the other suggestions and will probably incorporate them
into my on-going monitoring.
