I use:
=> fluxbox as WM
=> idesk for desktop icons
=> rox as file manager
It is very a very light setup, all easily configurable text files, and
easy to understand even for Windows adicts.
There is a good install and configure doc on the gentoo website:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/fluxbox-config.xml
In the past we have also used IceWM for a WM, with good results.
It sounds cool, I'll give it a try.
What I do know for sure is KDE for 6 client running on a 100Mb LAN,
server is a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 (not HT) and a common IDE disk sometimes
is really slow.
No swapping, the RAM is 2GB and the used one is never more than 1GB.
I still need to check the LAN for bottlenecks, but I'm pretty sure KDE
and OpenOffice are killing the CPU. Sometimes its up to 80%.
I don't know how could I check if the disk is the bottleneck, is there a way?
I've found an "OpenOffice hangs" thread on the ml, talking about an
OO.org lock file hanging the opening. But that was about version 1.*,
I'm using 2.0 (on Gentoo) and I've not found that file.
That's just for the record.
