I figured out my mistake in using scp, so here's the relevant section of

  If you are getting "mode not supported" from your monitor it sounds like your
video card is working but the monitor you are using does not support the video
mode.

 Try adding an X_MODE_0 line (i.e. X_MODE_0  = 800x600) to your lts.conf file to
select a video mode that your monitor can display or use a different monitor.
