David, LTSP-4.2 doesn't include the older XFree86 3.3.6 drivers. We decided not to include those, as the Xorg servers are generally better. there are some cases where there could be problems with Xorg drivers.
Can you tell us more about the video chipset you have in the thin clients? Also, you might try setting 'XSERVER = vesa'.
