You have to be running in an X session, to have $DISPLAY set. Also, you need to run lbus-start.sh on the server, while logged in from a thin client. Why aren't you just doing the normal LTSP local devices? You shouldn't need to run lbus-start.sh manually, it should just run automatically, when you log in. Do you have something different in your setup?
