Edd, This is usually an indication that you don't have a 'SCREEN_01 = startx' line in your lts.conf file.
Check that out. it's usually in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf If you do have that line, and it still doesn't work, then send us a copy of your lts.conf file.
