Great.
The link was from goggle and I was reading the html version.
Checked the sxw that I linked to and acpid part is missing :(
Here is the relevant text:
A-2. Workstation clean shutdown (ACPI support)
ATX workstations (specially newer) can't do a clean shutdown with APM,
so when you press the poweroff buton it does nothing. In my tests I had
one which didn't, so I've thought that would be great to add ACPI
support to the base *LTSP* kernel. Here is what you have to do, in order
to allow your workstation to do a clean shutdown:
1.Use the previous hints at A-1 – Compiling custom kernels for help on
compiling *LTSP* kernels. All the steps should be taken.
2.Now, let's download the ACPI userspace tools from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=33140
3.Unpack it, jump inside and build it:
tar xfvz *acpid*-1.0.3.tar.gz
cd *acpid*-1.0.3/
make
4.Copy the resulting *acpid* binary to $LTSP_ROOT/i386/sbin/:
# cp *acpid* /opt/*ltsp*/i386/sbin/
5.Set its permissions:
# chmod 755 $LTSP_ROOT/i386/sbin/*acpid*;
6.Create $LTSP_ROOT/i386/etc/*acpid*.conf with the following contents:
event=button power.*
action=/sbin/init 0
7.Create the service script in $LTSP_ROOT/i386/etc/rc.d/*acpid*:
###################################
#
# Start ACPI Deamon
#
echo "Starting ACPI deamon"
/sbin/*acpid* -c /etc/*acpid*.conf
8.Set its permissions 755:
# chmod 755 /opt/*ltsp*/i386/etc/rc.d/*acpid*
9.Now add this script as one Resource Configuration File for *LTSP*, in
the [Default] section ($LTSP_ROOT/i386/etc/lts.conf):
RCFILE_01 = *acpid*
10.Be sure that $LTSP_ROOT/i386/sbin/poweroff is a link to
$LTSP_ROOT/i386/sbin/haltsys:
# rm -f /opt/*ltsp*/i386/sbin/poweroff
# ln -s /opt/*ltsp*/i386/sbin/haltsys /opt/*ltsp*/i386/sbin/poweroff
At this stage, every workstation will boot a ACPI-capable kernel image,
and whenever you push its poweroff button, it will cleanly shutdown. It
will be very fast, as its filesystem is in RAM.

Are there plans to add acpid to ltsp?
Yes, this is something that i've definately been wanting to add to LTSP.
I, too, am annoyed by the behaviour of the power button, and i've been
wanting to fix this for quite some time. Just haven't had the chance.
but, with you pointing me to some information about how to go about it, it
should make it much easier to just jump in and do it.
Thanks,

On most new workstations the power switch does not actually cut the
power. Some have bios settings that will do instant power off, but most
require holding the power button for about 4 seconds.
acpid will shut down if you press the power switch on a newer workstation.
The stock debian acpid package does the correct thing as is.
it's pretty small. Should only add about 20k if one just installs the
needed files.
Found one mention of someone doing it in ltsp
http://republico.estv.ipv.pt/~nmct/ltsp/ha/ltsp-ha-howto-en-gpl.sxw
<http://republico.estv.ipv.pt/%7Enmct/ltsp/ha/ltsp-ha-howto-en-gpl.sxw>
There are a couple other ways to power off terminals but this seems
easiest to me.
