I found the solution. I was having the same problem on Fedora Core 5. It
appears that esd is not reading the ESD_SPAWN_OPTIONS variable. I
noticed that if you do an nmap of your terminal, port 16001 is closed. I
added "-public" to the esd command line and now nmap shows port 16001 as
open and sound works.
