If you are mounting directly, then why is $HOME a symlink?  I'm not

/etc/passwd:

sbalneav:x:2048:2048:Scott Balneaves:/home/scottshome:/bin/bash

$USER = sbalneav
$HOME = /home/scottshome

Unix makes no restrictions that the home directory has to, in any way,
be named like the userid.  /home/$USER is merely a convention, not a
requirement.

*shugs*, that's fine.  However, my point stands:  We mount in $HOME,
therefore, we search for $HOME.  If your $HOME doesn't map to a real
home directory, that's a byproduct of how you've set up environment, not a
"problem" in the script.  You'll have to maintain your own private
version of the lbus_event_handler.sh script.
