This must be related to the motherboard chipset. Mine is an old Via m/b. I have found that most distributions, including Ubuntu 6 but not Mepis 6, correctly load the i810 driver. Mepis loads the vesa driver which does not enable the full videoram. Changing it to i810 makes it work properly. However, the framebuffer (for graphical bootup) does not work in any distribution.

No, I think this problem is due to a broken version of the i810 driver.
I see the same message with LTSP 4.2 but the same machine works with LTSP
4.1. I posted the bug to the xorg bugzilla and a developer said "try
again with a recent xorg server." I haven't tried it yet (waiting for
muekow).
