well then, why does ltspcfg say it isn't?  i've enabled it in gdm.conf.

that notwithstanding, i will take jim's message into account and figure out how to get it running with the edubuntu setup.

xdmcp is installed just the same..if using gdm yoou can go to xdmcp
section of   gdm.conf and put enabled=true and uncomment the port
