That's not entirely true for every distro. Some distros have gdm and/or mountd expecting to be able to map an IP address to a hostname. It's been a while since i've bumped into this, because I ALWAYS either specify my hosts in the /etc/hosts file or I setup DNS forwards AND reverses. So, my advice is to always provide some method of mapping IP addresses to the hostnames of your thin clients.
