I believe the only hope for skype (or other softphones) is to get
pulseaudio working. It seems pretty close to working, but there is at
least one bug pending:

Not really.  If your thin client has a CPU which suits Skype (I mean
CPU perfomance and CPU architecture (Intel) ), you can run Skype on
your thin client as "local application".
