Hi everyone, An interesting debate about security when auto-mounting USB sticks has developed on my LUG mailing list.
Someone asked how to create an automount system on his Linux, and one of the gurus asked back if he really wanted to take THAT RISK... His point is that via corrupted file systems, viruses or just crashes might come directly into the kernel (mounting is in kernelspace). So he advised to manually mount the devices via mtools or something else just happening in userspace. My idea was to use this automounting mechanism in LTSP to enable the students to use their USB sticks here, but now I'm wondering if it's secure enough to really dare that :-) Thanks for all hints.
