I expect that you have actually got the serial port working just fine... the 
trouble is, unless I'm mistaken, I think you're running digikam on the 
SERVER.  Of course, as it's running on the server (though displaying on the 
client), it's not likely to see the camera which is attached to the client...

You can actually make something like this work with the equipment you have, 
but it's a not inconsiderable effort.  You need to get your serial app 
running as a "local app" on the client - I've succesfully set up serial 
communications from an LTSP client with kermit running as a local app.

Of course, if anyone has any other ideas for serial port over LAN support I'd 
be delighted to hear them...
