The classic console Unix tool 'top' will show all processes in the
system, and can sort by CPU usage, etc. The 'u' key will filter by a
particular username. 'htop' is an visually enhanced version of top, but
I don't think it can filter by user. However, it is more GUI-like in
that you can scroll around, it presents an ASCII tree view, and it uses
F-keys to sort/search.

A command-line tool 'ps' is extremely valuable; I suggest commiting the
following to memory:
ps -aux
This will show all processes running on the system, with the username in
the first column. You can combine this with grep to quickly see who is
running java, for instance:

ps -aux | grep java

or all processes by user 'joseph':
ps -aux | grep joseph

Yes, you can find this information with a GUI, but time is money, and if
you know this command you can get an answer in a few seconds and move on
to the next task, rather than clicking Start | Settings | Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, etc.

Having said that, both KDE and Gnome have GUI versions of these
applications. I believe the KDE version is called ksysguard, and the
Gnome tool is gtop, and both are nice to have around.

The 'who' command only lists who is currently logged into the system,
and is a condensed version of the 'w' command.
