Hi, Please bear with me if if the request / idea below is not appropriate for this list.
I'm working in a school's IT dept. Every day we get requests from teachers asking for possibilities to avoid students 'misusing' their notebooks in the class situation. They play games, set up wireless machine-to-machine networks, run unauthorized software when having tests etc. etc. What I see as a possible solution to all this is a bulletproof dual boot solution for the notebooks: Before they are allowed to connect to the school network for the first time, each student would need to run an installer which sets up a separate, small partition on their disk which some thin? client software including oo, firefox and some other 'necessary' apps. Now when the students boot their notebooks at school, they select the client boot option and the teacher have a class list where he/she can check that every student in the class have actually started their client software. The client software should be intelligent enough to detect if it is run in a virtual environment and report this to the teacher. In this way, it would be much easier to reduce student distractions from their notebooks while they still can (mis)use their XP os and apps / games while being at home.... Can I use LTSP in this scenario? I think it is essential (for short boot times and low network stress) that the notebooks are booted from a local partition. You comments on how to better control student computer use in classes (for the benefit of everyone) are highly appreciated ;-) best regards Tor ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
