Hi May I suggest you setup a heavy server with a fine distro onto it, my recommendation is SuSE10.2, but others are just as good. Install it with LTSP4.2 for (if any) real thin clients. Install FreeNX onto it. Let the notebooks be what they are (Windows anything...), let them have a small NoMachine client icon on their desktop, click it and run it full screen. This saves bandwidth. This way you have all of all worlds.
