Our LTSP server runs Fedora Core 6 and authd 1.4.3 on dual Opteron 252 CPUs and 4GB RAM, and DG runs on a separate Trustix box. The LTSP server has 20+ users and 700+ processes, but authd the performance is OK. I am not sure, but I think for each RFC 1413 request, the server has to look through each process individually to check which ports each process has open.
