You aren't the only one running into this issue.  That's why we spent so 
much time on the performance specs at the last Ubuntu developer summit.

I'm confident that the 7.10 (gutsy) release of Ubuntu will take care of 
an awful lot of the performance issues.  There's great work being done 
every day on this, and so far, I'm encouraged by what I'm seeing.

Until then, though, you might consider running both LTSP-5.0 and 
LTSP-4.2 on the same server.  They'll both happily live together. You 
just need to point your HP clients at the LTSP-4.2 stuff 
(kernel,rootpath).  The other clients sound like they're working ok with 
5.0.
