Any reason you are building from scratch instead of using the pre-packaged Edubuntu? For what its worth my Edubuntu install has worked pretty much flawlessly out of the box, and local devices are working perfect. If you don't like the schoolish looking additions of Edubuntu it is my understanding that you could apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and apt-get remove edubuntu-desktop and essentially have exactly what you are trying to accomplish manually.
