I have been using LDM_DIRECTX under Feisty and the speed has been great.  We 
have 108
clients and have not had a single complaint on speed once booted (or during 
boot for
that matter).  If you are comparing boot times and logout times, Ubuntu is 
slower. 
However they have done a lot of work to fix this in gutsy.  I'm sure Scott could
verify/expand on this, otherwise just know once booted with DIRECTX it is just 
as fast.
