We also use CentOS, now v5.  I know that if a font server is not 
available this will happen.
If you have another font server on your network tell ltsp.conf to use  
it and see if the problem goes away.
The solution is edit /etc/X11/fs/config  on your intended font server 
and rem out (disable) the (last?)  line:
###no-listen = tcp
We have used LTSP  4.1 and 4.2 with CentOS 4x and now 5.0 . Let me know 
if this isn't the solution.
