I don't know what platform you are using, but for Edubuntu 7.10 I
got the same symptoms with my first attempts at auto-logins.  The
solution was to upgrade the ldm package in the ltsp chroot with a
patched ldm deb (ldm_5.0.39ubuntu1~fg4_i386.deb).  I'm sorry, but I
didn't write down the URL for this package, but it is on the
developer's individual website.  You can probably find it through a
Google search.

Now my problem with the auto-login is that I can find no way to shut
the client terminal off (or to permanently log out) without hitting
the power button.
