Peter

I took a quick look at the link.
I may try doing that with kdm if I don't see anything happening with ldm.
If I'm going to have to maintain a display manger may as well do it the way I want it.
Interesting about the part on openvpn.
I'm not loosing sleep over xdmcp but it would be nice to secure it and the X.
ssh has a lot of overhead and is slow. I wonder how much better openvpn is.
I'd be tempted to try ipsec. It's a bit nastier to setup but I use it a lot and the overhead is pretty low. You can do a generic client setup similar to what they are showing but I have not tried it.
I use ipsec to tie together our subnets in our offices.

I'm rather concerned about ldm also.
I could live with ldm if it worked reliably. We have non-technical users and I'd rather not give them choices.
They have hooks in ldm to do the chooser part non-interactively.
Can check servers and see if they are up and what the loads are call direct the lowers load server.
Ldm seems sort of alpha.
Parts of ldm work very good.
The user interface is a bit weak but maybe that is because of my kde bias :-) My biggest concern that I have not heard any comments from any one working on it concerning it's problems.

Too poor. That's not really cool - the server has a very minimal installation.
And there is another problem. I didn't find any hint how to change the
appearance of the host/session chooser. We need it to be easily in
sight. It is a bit hidden in the left corner. Our current solution
with xdmcp and I think a chooser of kdm is much better. It shows
workload and users logged in on the workstations and the first thing
you do is to choose your workstation before you can enter name and pw.
Do you have any idea how to change the appearance of the login of ldm?
So far I am only able to change the theme... But that's useless. If
not I may try this:

ltspfs and gdm. I don't know if this will have any effects on
pulseaudio - do you?
thanks

Working on getting the etch ltsp backports to work.
Look at the preferences in the lower left hand corner of ldm.
As I recall the defaults are that on the server.
I did it but do not recall exactly how it's done :-(

Hey ltsp-users,

we use LTSP 5 Backports on a Debian Etch Server. As we would like to
have local device support enabled we need LDM to work as the display
manager. Users can choose between several workstations to which they
can connect and log in.
Unfortunately I couldn't figure out yet how one can define the desktop
environment. It should be possible to use LDM as a display manager for
a KDE session. Or am I totally wrong here? At least KDE, Gnome, XFCE
(which is the current default) must be available. Furthermore we need
a language chooser. I am convinced that it is implemented already
(https://wiki.edubuntu.org/LTSPLoginAndSessionHandling).
There is no difference between the configurations of the workstations
- all debian etch witch same language and session support. So I think
it can be defined locally in the ltsp environment (chroot).

Thank you very much for your help
