There are many ways to skin a cat. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch ie a fake live CD that contains an ltsp squash image http://www.livedistro.org/resources/documentation/howtos/booting-ubuntu-to-ram ie more hints and howtos Local boot from Flash USB or IDE Make a hard disk version first, then transfer to media. IDE flash is quick, boot access to USB is slow, but works. Boot from a usb-mem-stick is some 2 min, but then runs normally.
