I'm just guessing, but I'm thinking maybe your X keyboard layout isn't working. I'm assuming you tried manually clicking in the username field to activate it - I've seen that sometimes it doesn't focus automatically. Might wanna check your thin-client logs on the shell (/var/log/Xorg.6.log ?) for clues as well.
