If the users want to *see* Ubuntu, then you need a full Ubuntu server
installed somewhere.  The --dist option only affects the packages that
get installed in the chroot.  These are things like video drivers, xorg,
etc., but it does not include anything that the user actually sees.  It
only includes files that the thin client hardware needs to operate.

So unfortunately after all your hard work, it looks like your Debian
server may be more or less useless for your LTSP needs.  That is, if
your users really must have Ubuntu.
