I tried DSL 1.2.1 (not nearly a current version), and it behaved just like you 
said.  I tried with Knoppix 5.1.1 and it worked.  I
think the difference is that DSL uses TinyX and Knoppix uses XFree or Xorg
(can't remember which).

I ran my test on a 233 MHz P2 with 64 MB of RAM.  I got a GDM screen and
successfully logged into a Gnome session, but didn't test any further than
that.
