the workaround by modifying ltspfsmounter on the application server
seems to work quite well.
It is mentioned in a recent thread (though I don't remember the URL).
I applied this to a RHEL 5.3 running Gnome 2.16 (which apparently does
not have the hooks later Gnomes have). And it works well.
