I also had this problem with the Ubuntu 8.10 kernel and the 8169 driver.
I could reproduce it in 1-2 minutes if I stressed the network by running
netperf from *all* the clients at once (=980 mbps overall bandwidth).

I did this from the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) so *I was able to see the
kernel dump there*, there wasn't a need for a serial cable.

This bug (assuming we're experiencing the same bug) was ***fixed*** in
the 8169 module provided by the Ubuntu 9.04 kernel.
