I like to make extensive use of ramdisks too to reduce disk writes.
This guide is excellent, even if you don't intend on mounting your
root partition read-only, as it gives some great hints on moving
potentially io-intensive directories off-disk. Even if you mount only
/tmp in RAM, then move your browser caches there you should be miles
ahead in a heavily multi-user system such as LTSP.
