This reminds me of my problems with usbsticks, see
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=177580#c85
In short: /usr/bin/lbmount (on the server!) missed the suid flag.
I just removed the suid flag again and was able to repuduce your
symptoms.
